Mrs. Estella Hernández
Gillette has been named Deputy Director, External Relations
Office. Ms. Gillette has the associate responsibility for
integrating the Center's external activities in the areas
of education, university research, community and congressional
relations, and public affairs.
Mrs. Gillette has a wealth of
knowledge and experience in a wide range of Johnson Space
Center (JSC) activities. Since joining JSC in 1968, she has
served in progressively responsible positions, including Equal
Opportunity Specialist; Employee Development Specialist; Equal
Employment Manager; Deputy Director, JSC Equal Opportunity
Programs Office; and Special Assistant to the Associate Administrator
for Small and Disadvantaged Business Uitilization at NASA
Headquarters.
In July 1994, Mrs. Gillette
was selected as Director of the JSC Office of Equal Opportunity
and Diversity Management (OEODM) (formerlly JSC Equal Opportunity
Programs Office, EOPO), after serving for one year as
the Deputy Director of EOPO. Her responsibilities include
the management of JSC's affirmative action policies, including
establishing and maintaining relationships with educational
and civic organizations; identifying barriers for employment
and advancement of JSC's minority employees; monitoring employment,
promotions, and separations of JSC employees; administering
the JSC discrimination complaints process; and providing activities
to generate interest in, and education of the special emphasis
programs to JSC employees and to the community. As the Director
of the OEODM, Mrs. Gillette was a member of the Astronaut
Selection Board during the five selection processes between
1994-2004.
Mrs. Gillette joined NASA in
1964 as a clerk-stenographer and eventually became an executive
secretary, with positions in the Engineering and Development
Directorate, the Reliability and Quality Assurance Directorate,
the Earth Resource Program Office, and the Space and Life
Sciences Directorate.
Mrs. Gillette graduated in 1963
from Jefferson Davis High School in Houston, Texas; received
a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration in 1986
from the University of Houston Clear Lake ; selected for a
fellowship for a women's development program at Simmons College
in Boston in May 1989; received a Master's degree in human
resources management in 1994 from the University of Houston
Clear Lake. She is currently a doctoral student in The George
Washington University's Executive Leadership Program in the
School of Human Resource Management.
